Travel Log



 Day 1. 

Traveled my plane to Chicago, Newark. Overnight to Shannon. 


Day 2

  Landed at Shannon airport. Attended traditional music festival in Louisburgh Mayo county. Sang at the Sean Nos local performance. Explored the town. Stayed at an air bnb between

 Newport’s and Mulranny. 


Day 3

Went to Killeen Graveyard,  Burrishoole Abbey, Rockfleet castle, Westport House, Met with Liam and Mary OMalley in Westport, walked around downtown Westport.  Walked the Greenbelt behind Mary’s house with the dog, pet Mary’s lamb


Day 4

Went with Mary L her farm property to feed the sheep. Rented a bike to ride the Great western greenway from Mulranny to Achill island. Ate at a beautiful seaside restaurant. 


Day 5

Caught O’Malley Ferry to Clare Island.  Saw the OMalley Castle and nearby Abby.  Got the key from Padraig OMalley at the only food store and chatted.  Only 150 people live on the Island



Day 6

Visited the Clew Bay Heritage center and Museum at the Westport Quay area and South Mayo family history center in Ballingrobe.  On to Ashford Castle to walk the grounds. Explored cute town of Cong and did some shopping. 


Day 7

Sightseeing on the way to Shannon.  Stopped at "The Bureen".  Flew Shannon to Newark.  Newark to Colorado.  Colorado to SLC.  











Day 2

Day 6

Sight seeing at the Burren . Saw Shannon briefly. Spent all day on planes from Shannon to Newark to Denver, then SLC.

 Here I sit in the Shannon airport all by my lonesome.  Who travels alone?  That’s just crazy.  Having accomplished the feat, I want to write about it.  Like Cole’s lyric for my Ireland sing states, “You can sail alone…but then again you’re never alone.  Never alone!” There is a huge reference to not being alone because you always have your family by your side.  You always have your ancestors by your side-they walk with you.  Do I believe that?  Yes and no.   I really could have used some help with my navigation.  In a way I guess my family was with me at least as the voice in my head pointing out all my mistakes.  Their voices yelled, “ Hey don’t go that way,  that’s the wrong side of the road. Royals

  I may not be able to figure out how I'm related to the pirate queen, but I, Erin O'Malley, daughter of Charles Gerald O'Malley, have royal blood coursing through my veins.  Mary Queen of Scots is my 14th great aunt, and “Princess Di” (Diana Spencer) is my 9th cousin!  Hey-That means I'm related to the future king of England.  You can’t get more royal than that!  English royalty seems to hold a particular fascination with the entire world.     Maybe I could handle all the royal accouterments-the titles, the lands, the castles, estates, the luxury, the pampering, the royal treatment, and the important duties. Maybe I couldn’t. Regardless, for one brief moment, I get to pretend at the oldest castle (1228)-Ashford Castle. I could stay there if I wanted to pay 500+ dollars a night, but I’m opting for an air-bnb in Westport for $50 a night-more in line with my peasantry income.
